Welcome, this section is for young people, teachers and parents. Young people are more likely to start smoking or experiment with cigarettes between puberty and young adulthood (11-16yrs). A young person can become addicted to nicotine within just two weeks of experimenting. We are committed to reduce smoking among young people and promote smokefree norms. The results from last years lifestyle survey suggests:
- In Year 7 less female students had tried smoking compared to male students.
- Smoking rates increased with age; males were less likely to be regular smokers compared to females.
- Although the majority of young people did not smoke, a small minority smoked between 20 and 30 cigarettes a day.
